Achieving Your Goals

Research states that accomplishing your goals can improve your life in many ways. In addition to changing your behaviors or developing a new life plan, you’ll improve your confidence and self-esteem. The more control we exhibit over our behaviors, the more confident we feel about ourselves and our life decisions.

One way to achieve a goal is by writing an objective (a simple strategic sentence that will direct you). If you’ve decided that your goal is to become a better manager, you could write objectives such as: I will save our company thirty thousand dollars in expenditures, I will implement an employee satisfaction program, or I will conduct four open discussions. One aspect of creating (and following through) on objectives is to make sure that they are SMART. SMART objectives are:

  • S – specific. Exactly what do you want to achieve?
  • M – measurable. Can you count or mark the outcome in some way?
  • A – achievable. Are the objectives within your realm of capabilities?
  • R – realistic. Do the objectives make sense and are they realistic?
  • T – time-based. Do the objectives have a completion date?
