Common Misspelled and Misused Words

Clear and concise writing depends on more than just word choice. Correct spelling and properly used words can affect how your writing and business is perceived. In order to boost the clarity of what you write, here are some guidelines.

  • It’s is a contraction that means it is whereas its is the possessive form. Write:
    • It’s time to go to work.
    • Its cover is on the table.
  • You’re is the contraction for you are whereas your is the possessive form. Write:
    • You’re the best sales professional on the team.
    • Your proposal is right on target.
  • Anyways is not a word. Always use anyway .
  • Use among when you're referring to two people and between when you write about two or more people. Write:
    • Please split the food among Matt and Lee.
    • The money should be divided between the whole group.
